Trigger Discipline
On a controller, Earfh's right stick fired the gun whenever it moved, and every stray shot could break a streak. The owner suggested a layout where the sticks only aim, tried it, and made it the default.
Written up later from the repo's history and dated to the days it describes.
The streak system in Earfh came with a problem on controllers that no test would have found. The right stick fired the gun whenever it was pushed. Adjusting aim therefore fired shots, and a shot that missed an enemy standing close counts as a near miss, which breaks the Ranged streak. The player was being punished for aiming.
The owner's idea
The spec for the fix opens with that observation, and the idea came from the owner. Offer a scheme where the sticks only move and aim, and put firing on the triggers. It was built the same day, on October 4, as two named schemes.
Standard Issue is the original layout. In Trigger Discipline the sticks move and aim and nothing else. The right trigger fires the gun, and the right shoulder swings the melee weapon, whichever slot is the character's primary. Dash stays on the left trigger and left shoulder. Start pauses. The ability is a chord, both stick clicks held together.
Keyboard and mouse are identical in both schemes. Only the controller changes.
The default
The scheme was meant to be an option. After the first smoke test the owner played it, and the spec's record is one line: "this should be main layout." Trigger Discipline became the default in a second commit that day. A new save, a Reset to defaults and an old save with no scheme setting all start in it, provided the old save's controller bindings were untouched. A save with custom controller bindings stays on Standard Issue, because moving it would overwrite choices the player made.
Details that took thought
The input system cannot bind a chord, so the player code also counts both stick clicks held on one controller, and only when Trigger Discipline is active. One stick click alone does not trigger the ability.
Two new rebindable actions, Fire gun and Swing melee, call the weapon slots directly. That kept the existing shoot and melee actions meaning primary and secondary slot on every device. Standard Issue leaves the new ones empty, and the Trigger Discipline preset fills them.
Switching schemes on the Controls page writes the new preset to the controller bindings and leaves keyboard bindings alone. If the current bindings differ from the preset, the first press only warns that switching resets them, and a second press within five seconds confirms. After that every slot except the chord stays rebindable.
Aim assist, a third scheme and per-device schemes are listed as not in this change.
